Olive Burgess is a multidisciplinary artist working across printmaking, photography, moving image, sculpture and sound. Her work connects seemingly disparate things in order to draw the mind to connections which western systems dismantle and deny. A research-based practitioner, she explores themes of self, time, and place within broader societal contexts—leaning specifically on feminist and postcolonial landscape theory. Her work engages with place and the body as interconnected ways of knowing the self. As a woman, and more specifically a lesbian woman, her body is continually mediated by systems designed to displace and dislocate. Her work acts as a counter to this: a gesture of re-centralising the body. Burgess lives and works on Gadigal land, however she grew up on a river and a farm on Birpai land. I acknowledge that I write, research and make work on Indigenousl land, owned by the ancestors, past present and emerging. I acknowledge that I have undergone research and made work on and about the land of Gadigal, Birpai, Gumbaynggirr, Ngunnawal and Bundjalung country where material is alive, as is lived and born within by the traditional owners of these lands. Many themes I work with are key concepts to Indigenous Australians who have known and shared for over 60,000 years. I am thankful for the skies, the land and the water of which are continuously cared for by these people - the oldest living culture in the world and the people for which nature and culture have never been divided.
